I – Keeping Windows and Doors Shut and Locked

Obvious, I know, and you probably double check and triple check – it’s all good before going out but still worth a mention. Easiest way to keep things safe is to never give any easy opportunities to anyone.

II – Wheel Steering Lock

A classic example and you may have used these before, but if not, pick yourself up one of these to ensure no one can drive your RV if they break in. It’s that extra layer of security that also provides reassurance when you’re out and about for extended times. However, you might be lucky and have a very old RV, those usually are very particular on how to start, and only you might know their ticks, so no worry there either!

III – Be Stealthy, Be Sensible

Ok, you can’t hide an RV, they’re usually big and stick out but that’s a given. You can however take precautions and be careful with what you leave on display and keep hidden what you don’t need to. For example, if you’re having a big sort out or clear out somewhere public and people might be seeing generators and so forth, then maybe find somewhere else to stay after. Try to advertise as little as possible what you have.

Can be as simple as just not leaving devices on the counter when you go out for the day, keep them hidden away and not visible through windows. However just sticking it in a cupboard might not be enough, so check out this article with a few handy hiding places.

IV – Take Your Valuables with You

You’re the safest place as you know it’s with you. It’s not always going to be feasible to take your phone and wallet with you on every excursion but each time you leave the RV just take the time to think what should I take and what will be safer with me than in the RV?

There are belt pouches to store valuables and keep secure whilst walking out to deter pickpockets as well if that’s a concern too.

V – Kitting out the RV

You can’t avoid needing to take some necessities with you, but take a moment when you’re packing it away and taking items. What do I need to take? What can I leave? Or if you’re buying new sets do I need the most expensive or will cheaper do?

Technology is always updating and you might have a few spare devices sat in your drawer, why not take them instead so if the worst happens, it’s not as big a loss as it could be and no expensive new items to replace. Same with cutlery, cooking equipment and so on, do you need the most fanciest china or can you get away with cheaper options that will be less of a dent in the budget if things get lost or stolen.

It’s not always going to be possible and you’re going to want certain items with you but just take the time with each item as you’re setting up for a trip. Do I really need this and how sad would it be to lose it?

VI – Using Phone Data

The world has changed, everyone is more connected than ever and internet access is seen as a basic human right, so you’re likely wanting to use this during your travels. However, I’d just say it’s worth a mention that by sharing data or using Bluetooth, it’ll advertise that it’s around as others will be able to see it on their devices.

Make sure you don’t have any Wifi names that might be identifying such as “RVRIGHTHERE” and keep everything secure and password protected. You don’t want anyone clogging up your bandwith as well if your data sharing is unprotected.

I’m not saying don’t use data of course, we all need to and keep connected, how else can you get to read this blog! But just make sure anything like that is as secure as possible so you don’t leave any possibilities for people to take advantages.

VII – Documents Disposal

Identification theft is certainly no joke and can really mess someone’s life up, we are all taught to be careful about what we dispose and use a shredder where possible. This doesn’t stop at the home but for RV too! If you’ve got any documents with personal info on, take all the steps possible to ensure it can’t be pieced together from the trash and used against you.

On the same note, you’ll need to travel with certain documents, you can’t avoid that but make sure you’re not taking the whole filing cabinet with you! Especially anything identifying. If the worst happens and someone does break in, you don’t want them to find out your home address as they’ll certainly know you’re not home then!

I’d check your GPS devices too that you do not have the route to your home address saved into it, it’ s an option on many GPS but if it’s been taken from your RV. It gives the person a clear beacon towards an unprotected home. Overall just again take some time to go through all these items and make sure you’ve taken every step possible to prevent anything being used against you.

VIII – Dashcam

There’s more people in the world, means more cars and that means more chances of things going wrong or accidents occurring. In the adrenaline rush of such incidents sometimes details are missed or tempers flare and it can get messy, even if you’re in the right, you might find yourself footing the bill!

Therefore invest in a dash cam for your RV to keep footage recording so that in the unfortunate event of any accident or incident you’ve got proof ready for your insurers and theirs. Or for the police if the incident requires that sort of attention! SD cards are cheaper and cheaper and the Dashcams can be set to record over old footage that isn’t needed.
