Sometimes RV can get a bit damp or just need some refreshment to cupboards and linen closets. These great little deodorizer disks are very easy and cheap to make, and the usage possibilities are almost endless – drop them on the bottom of your garbage can, inside your fridge or your closet. They spread lovely smell and absorb any extra moisture.

This is by no means a new idea and it’s been going around Pinterest for years, but I wanted to share it with you, as I have noticed that they are really handy in RVs.

First things first, what are they?

These are small disks made of baking soda (which naturally neutralizes odors) and essential oils, that you can put wherever in the RV that needs a refreshing smell/deodorizing!

Great places to use your deodorizer disks are but not limited to

  • On the bottom of the garbage can
  • Linen cupboard
  • Closet
  • Inside your clean towels
  • Under the kitchen sink
  • In the bathroom
  • Sports/Gym bag
  • Fridge
  • Footwear

Only place I wouldn’t recommend using these disks is close to your pets, especially cats, as many essential oils can be harmful to them.

How to make your own deodorizer disks

* Silicone molds are best for this purpose, as they are the easiest for getting your new deodorizer disks out, but the ice cube trays I got from Ikea worked just as fine. Essential oil smells stick to silicone pretty easy though, so don’t use the same ones you use for baking. You could also just create the water + baking soda mix and drop a few drops of essential oil on them later, after they’ve been taken out of the mold.

Mix half a cup of water and your essential oil together. The amount of essential oil depends on your preference, usually 3-4 drops are enough but I wanted some extra kick and added like 10… Another way of doing this is to drop a few drops of essential oil after your disks have dried.
Start slowly adding it to the baking soda, until you have created a thick paste, similar to toothpaste – add more water if necessary. Divide the paste into the molds and let dry, at least 24-48 hours. Just make sure that they really are dry, as otherwise they’ll break.

What to use instead of essential oils?

Some people have achieved great results by using soap fragrance oil or a vanilla extract, however they will loose their scent quicker than an essential oil would.

I made them in a few different shapes and smells.

These disks last around a month or two, but if you mainly use them for their smell, you could drop a few extra drops of essential oils on them to make them last longer. Store the unused disks in a dark, airtight container.

After use, don’t just dispose them! For example, you could crumble them on the bottom of your garbage can, pour hot water on, leave it to soak and then use it to clean the can. Or crumble them inside your laundry basket to keep your laundry fresher for longer before the wash.

And that’s it! Let me know in the comments if you tried it and what you think!
